Wow, a decade is done. Where did that go? Feels just like yesterday that my family and I were moving back from Europe and looking to new horizons in Canada. Ten years ago, I would have told you that I was likely still going to be a Head Coach, after all that’s the position I left in the French Elite League, those were some of the most fun working days of my life. But God had an amazing different short-term plan.
I remember the call vividly. The call you might be asking? Anyone that had a chance to watch the Two Popes recently (awesome movie by the way) knows all too well what I am talking about. But my call was not to the Priesthood, at least not yet, it was to serve in a different way through the game of hockey.
I have long talked about the foreshadow of watching the St. Louis Blues skating coach in 2008, Barry Karn. I met him that summer at the St. Louis Blues Development Camp. I was a rookie Head Coach in the French Elite League and I approached Andy Murray, then Head Coach of the St. Louis Blues if he could give me some tips, after all Andy was the best coach I ever played for, he stood for the right values, code of ethics, teamwork and competition.
When I got to St. Louis I couldn’t help but notice this guy gracefully flying down the ice instructing players about their bodies during skating specific sessions. I was in awe, I was interested and said to myself that if God moved me away from being a Head Coach that this is something I could maybe do!
As we know, and we are so thankful, the rest is history. In March of this year Perfect Skating will celebrate its 10th full year as an incorporated company. We actually started our first program in Aug of 2009 but made the company official in March of 2010.
I can’t help but think of this New Year that’s fresh in our hearts without expressing our gratefulness for the last 10 years. Our first full decade of PS. I look back and reflect on how we did it? How we failed forward? And of course, what’s next?
When I speak to people of all walks of life about the success of PS, the first thing I think of is the word Faith. You see, faith allowed us the ability to move outside the box, allowed us to think creatively, push ourselves to the brink of the newest research and technologies, in essence faith allowed us to be open to the improvement of change.
The other word that comes to mind in the midst of the start of this New Year is work. But its root is with Faith. When you trust a hope, get excited and motivated by it, the work just flows. It actually doesn’t feel like work and your organization builds a positive based culture from the inside out. That creates success over time. And it’s true, it always does.
So, how about those New Year goals and resolutions? Anchor your root in Faith. Let it allow the right doors to open and the wrong ones to close. Let it allow your mind to dream and make new and let the motivation that comes through that process allow the work to flow.
Flow eh? Kind of sounds like our method on the ice. You can find it in all things and I hope this New Year, the start of this awesome new decade you will have the courage to find it for you.
