6 Things To Check Off Before Tryouts

It’s that time of year again.  Man, where did the summer go?  I hope it was as exciting for you as it’s been for me.  I’ve got another 4 weeks to go until NHL training camps start Sept 14th, but for those of you who are ready to draw the sword soon, here are 6 things to checkbox heading into try-outs.

  1. Trust in your Prep:  Whatever preparation you did this off-season, believe it was the best prep you’ve ever had.  Don’t worry about what everybody else did, trust in your prep, you know what you put in and what you got out, you’re READY.

  2. Do what you Do:  We all have our gifts.  Even Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid rarely kill penalties or are asked to block shots.  Show evaluators what makes you special.  If you're fast, skate.  If you’ve got great mitts, dish pucks.  If you can snipe, find those soft areas and finish.  If you're defensive, stay on the right side off the puck, be hard and defend.  If you're physical, make some noise and if you’re a goalie, control your rebounds and stop the puck.  Always focus on showcasing your gifts, they come most natural to you, let them fly!

  3. Start Fast:  I’ve seen kids have a big first day and make the TEAM.  Everybody talks about a fast starter.  While everybody is still feeling out the process, be confident, be courageous and get out of the gates early.  Be ready TO GO for session #1.

  4. Outcompete Everyone (even if it’s your buddy):  Every coach likes a competitor, you know the one who wins every face off, gets to every loose puck, blocks every shot, makes every play and wins every battle?  Yeah man, that’s got to be you, even if it means that you have to drop your buddy with a reverse shoulder hit a la Filip Forsberg. Don’t worry you can buy can him/her a Biosteel bar after the session and set a make-up date once you make the TEAM!

  5. Mind over Matter:  Stay in your zone.  Control the controllable (that’s you by the way), don’t worry about who your line mates are going to be, matchups, how many spots are available, what the coach thinks…too many distractions.  Stay focused on you, block out all the unnecessary distractions and GO PLAY!

  6. It’s an opportunity, have FUN with it:  It’s all about the opportunity.  A lot of us consider an opportunity less stressful than a try-out.  Focus on the opportunity.  Get out there, be excited, get after it and have FUN!!
